day trip to Helsinki

30 Aug
Place where I departed from to get to Helsinki for the main purpose of buying halal meat with 2 friends from Nigeria who lived here for almost a year.

Something which caught my eye as I was walking there, reminded me of my maple friends…

So from Lappeenranta to Helsinki then walked to the metro station called Rautatientori. Next stop was Itakeskus.

Interesting piece of art?

This was my late lunch at some halal restaurant above the mosque, The mosque was rather dirty and mainly populated by Somalians. I think the food os of Somalian origin. Looks alot like briyani back home but it taste good. The mosque is in Pasilan which is a stop away from Helsinki. My pictures are in the wrong order here unfortunately…this is the door of the mosque in Pasilan. There are quite a number of mosques and halal food stores in Helsinki area…

Ylama’

29 Aug
I am very lazy and extremely sleepy to typed what happened today. Alot happened at the Ylama’ countryside. This was when we just arrived by bus there. with the German girls and French guys… in the dance area…with Lithuanian girls and polish girl

we were waiting and were bored…

My lithuanian friend liked the ape alot,…

playing some other game…funny game…
while playing some game

the German guy was saying they looked like a very cute couple…cutest actually

going back

haha…i was so happy to be able to reac the ingredients of this chocolate in english!!! so I could buy it…yay! I bought other stuff from the supermarket as well as I got this really nice girl working there to translate the ingredients for me…she is so super nice so I think I will go there every friday…so she could help me! Its not that the other Fin’s cant help but they really dont understand or are not able to translate for me.

It doesnt look that delicious but yea I got to eat something so I fried fries, and here they are, with canned tuna, baby tomatoes, a slice of cheese and toasted bread. I think I should stop eating toasted bread because I eat it everyday. Strawberry jam with bread is too bland for me so I normally toast my bread on the pan. There is not toaster here. So my dear friends, please note that not everything is blissful here for me. Its tough life when you are used to eating delicious food everyday back home.

randomness

28 Aug
Was bored in class so i took photos of the euro coins from 2 euros to 10 cents euros….I was comparing what was different about classes here. The environment is so silent that if i coughed the whole class can hear. The students do not even whisper and if the students are not paying attention, the teacher would not say a thing but continue teaching. Some teachers will give handouts, some will ask us to copy, some will ask us to print. Some are for 2 periods, some are only for one. It is confusing really. An all new system but the like head of department is so extremely patient and nice that she is willing to explain to you very clearly. Printing is actually FREE in the library.

We were supposed to fill up the slot for washing clothes but we didnt know until we started washing the clothes and then 2 ladies came in. Luckily it was around 7 more minutes only. I dried my clothes for like 30 minutes…so fast right?

Marjola (excursion)

27 Aug
We left to Marjola which is like a forest area. I wasn’t wearing proper jacket, just a thin one so I was freezing cold. We were divided into 2 groups and I was in the same group as Shi Yun, Annika, Emilie, a Spanish girl with interesting eye, Michael, Micheal, Egle, 2 russian girls and a few more people.

We did some funny stuff like tieing our legs together and jumping across 100metre, piggy-bagging another person, word games, puzzle solving and a few more.

All the Lithuanian girls and I!

Singaporean girls and Lithuanian girls…

at the dock

My group won and this was the gift, a thumb drive!

Lappeenranta harbour

26 Aug
This is like around 5am? Beautiful right? Taken from my balcony.

My kitchen. I think it is nice…

I will just give a peek at my room….here goes

Morning view from my apartment balcony.

On the way to school, I and A met up with one of our classmates and we walked to school together. We actually went to the apartments office to solve some internet problems…well it is solved now since I am actually blogging.
School ended at 12 plus and there was a meeting with our tutors at 4plus so we went back home. On the way, i grabbed some groceries and fried my first fried rice. I think it taste ok. I ahd to cook the rice in a pot because the rice cooker requires an adaptor which I still havent got unfortunately.

After the meeting which seems to be just about booze, party and some general stuff, I and A went to the harbour…

Trekking up the hill to get a a bird’s eye view of the place…

Upon reaching up the hill…was freezing!

Some memorial sites, statues…

I miss blogging so so much!!!

So here I am in FINLAND!!! Wee….!!!

Going to Finland

24 Aug
From London to Helsinki to Lappeenrata.
the sunrise view from the Hotel room…
Look at the street at 7.45am…empty…peaceful
The bustsop…
Near the Helsinki airport where we were living in the Bonus Inn.
In Helsinki walking towards the central train station to get to Lappeenranta.
Just reached Lappeenranta around 12.40pm.

I went grocery shopping. Discovery: everything is in English and I am appreciating my country even more each day. And I have to pay 20 cents euros for the bag.
Just on the way back to the apartment.
The real issues…
I am sitting on my very pathetic bed in Taipaisalrantie, Lappenranta. I hope I will be able to sleep well tonight.

I have so many worries on my mind; bank issues back home and here, internet unavailability here in my apartment. I am so so so very disappointed. I couldn’t get the universal adapters to charge my beloved laptop, chargers and so on…fortunately though I can use my handphone charger. I don’t know the password for my brother’s phone (spare phone). I spend so much money already!!!

Doing grocery shopping can be tiresome with everything in Finnish and I have to check the ingredients I am buying for certifying it halal myself. I am helpless….

I went grocery shopping twice today! I don’t know how to do things. My roommate is from Lithunia and she is really nice and warm but we sort of have some difficulty communicating sometimes but we are getting on fine. Alhamdulillah for that.
Lappenranta is beautiful!!! I love it! Its cold outside. We don’t need to on the aircon, it gets cold after some time. I hope I remain in pink health, please Do’a for me!
The train ride here was nice, but it was all Christmas tree looking forest area here only. But still a wonderful and peaceful place.

We still don’t know where the laundry room is when it is supposed to be in the building. My apartment is on the 3rd floor just imagine lugging my huge luggage up! My tutor helped me. She is Tia a very nice girl. I am so tired of lugging my huge luggage up and down trains and buses and flights of stairs.

Journey to Finland via London

23 Aug
Before that, my wonderful friends came to send me off while I was checking in my luggage which a freaking 31.9KG!!! The other 2 girls travelling with me had luggages which were 3 times smaller than mine! Haha…cant help it since I had to bring lots of stuff to cook there otherwise I would shrivel and…don’t imagine how I will look!

My Qantas flight got delayed from 11.20 to 11.55 to 12.45. Everything happened for a good reason, I got to spend more time with my beloved family and friends at Popeyes. We had fun while eating; playing games initiated by my dear sis-in-law. My friends and I went in at 11.55pm and we spent the remaining time using the internet and had to run to the gate because it was 12.30am already.

I had to be so dumb to fill my water bottle with water and had to run to the toilet to empty it. I also brought in a scissors. I tried to remember not to but again I forgot!

It felt super weird being in the midst of so many foreigners where I looked weird and different. The 12 hour flight wasn’t so bad after all; filled with movies – Harold and Kumar, What Happened in Vegas and dramas – Drake and Josh and I really enjoyed watching the flight route. Travelled through Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Hatchai, Mumbai, Tehran, Budapest, Vienna and finally to London. I watched the temperature (highest minus 59’C) , the altitude and everything really intrigued me!!! It is not my first flight but the first I actually paid any attention to the flight. For food, I ate mostly fruits, had to chocolate..weeee!!! It was delicious! We got the snack pack at like 6plus in the morning London time; water, apple and cookies.

Now, after traveling over 10800km, I’m really sleepy and tired but cant sleep waiting for 3 more hours…. we experienced some shakiness during the flight till the crew ordered for all to be seated. It was a little scary since we do not know what is going on.

We landed safely in London at 6.50am/ around 2pm(Singapore time). When I walked out of the airplane, I felt a gush of cold wind like aircon but slightly colder. It was so nice but short-lived. There was no bridge to the building so we had to take a bus to the arrival terminal and we took another bus to terminal 5 because we thought we were supposed to travel to Helsinki from there but gosh we were wrong, it was supposed to be terminal 1! We took our time to get our boarding passes and took a bus to terminal 1. Upon reaching there, we took a lot of pictures and all and found a stretch of seats to relax. My shoulders are really aching from the improper sleeping positions and carrying the super duper heavy bag.

When we reached London airport, in the bus, my mum called me and it got through!!! Alhamdulillah! I am so happy and she is happy to hear that I am fine. I messaged Eli to tell her I AM IN LONDON!!! So near yet so far!…she was surprised but she cant do much she is few hours away from London! Insyallah…

It is so different. So many observations but not all can be expressed.

Spore – 4.20pm London 9.18 am. 23 August 2008
Im typing from here in London-Heathrow airport.
Instead of transiting at Frankfurt, we got flight to London and from there to Helsinki, our final destination.

Off to Finland

organic product, you sure?

21 Aug
It was a totally last minute thing but turned out to be a very insightful talk after all. It was a talk for mothers actually because the lady, the speaker; didn’t catch her name was launching her baby range. It is called miessence. My bro asked me if i was free to attend this thing which is by my sis-in-law’s best friends company. She is my friend too in a way since we traveeled together before, once.

Organic products are gaining popularity among the health conscious consumer thus the surge in the supply provider has responded to the need. Honesty, you have to go for the talk to understand what is really behind those fancy bottles of perfumes, cosmetics and skin care products.

It is scary when she, the speaker painted the picture for us to listen while our jaws dropped in wonder. Now let me paint it to you.

THERE ARE NO COSMETIC PRODUCTS WHICH ARE NATURAL AND THERE IS NOTHING ORGANIC ABOUT THEM.

The natural coconut oil they include as their ingredient is processed from coconut oil but many toher stuff are placed in it.

When looking at the ingredients, their RULE OF THUMB is arranging in descending order of the composition. Which means if aleo vera extract is listed last in the list; the product probably contain 1-3% of aleo vera only.

Many many many (cant stress enough) of cosmetics and skin care products contain chemicals (Formaldehyde) which is a Casinogen (causes cancer) .

CANCER IS PREVALENT IN 1 IN 2 SINGAPOREANS IN THEIR LIFE.

This means that the person sitting next to you could or would suffer from cancer in his/her life.

DID YOU KNOW THAT BABIES TODAY ARE BORNE TOXICATED?

I think this is really sad and scary. All the harmful chemicals which cosmetics and skin care companies claim to contain beneficial ingredients to your skin is actually harming the environment as well. For example of it goes into the rivers where fishes live and through our complex ecosystem, we eventually eat the fishes thus getting whatever sickness we have today.

These skin care products which mother use affects the children as well and that is the cause of the many deficiencies in the newborn and hormonal deficiencies today. When the babies are borne, the mothers then apply these baby care products which contains this chemical which i didnt catch which is also harmful for the baby. Babies are also more succeptible to getting infected.

She shared so much more about tobacco her very inspiring life story and how she came up with her product which can be bought from her website or a number of stores here. She is not just a successful business woman but a mother of 3.

Lastly, before i explain about the pictures below, she talked about anti-oxidants. We normally hear it is good but we dont understand why right? I dont know about you but for me it was like that but NOW i DO!

It is the anti-oxidants which protects us from the harmful stuff we are faced with daily. We need to consume up to 5000 CRAC ( forgot what it stands for) daily. This comes from fruits and vegetables and we need 5 cups of them daily. Are we getting the correct amount to protect ourselves?

Never in my fortunate life have I won any, ANY lucky draw. But today, lucky lucky me won this baby products. Haha i plan to give it to my cousin who just gave birth last week…so it wasnt so wasted afterall.
