Eurotrotter journal: Tales of Milan

30 Nov

Happened in Milan airport as well, when it started with a simple question like;

Me: do you know if any shops were open? ( it was 12am and she was reading a book and I thought the fastest way for time to fly is to read a book)

She: Urm… I am not sure because I cant leave my stuff ( she had so many things with her)

Me: ohh ok thanks.

She: I have nutella. ( asking earnestly, she thought I was hungry and wanted to buy food)

Me: Ohh its ok thanks anyway.

After a few hours, she reading away, me writing away.

Around 2.30am

I was hungry and I always bring this bag full of fruit, milo packets, cereal and chocolates and some biscuits. If I ever get hungry or anything, I’m safe. I learnt this from my dear sis-in-law.

Back to being hungry, I thought, I should get an orange. And so I dug into my bag and pulled out an orange.

Me: Should I offer to her and orange too? (the girl next to me)

Myself: Urm, but I only have a few and I this is only the beginning of my trip.

Me: Ohh come on, don’t be such a stingy idiot! It is just an orange.(I always have to chide myself)

The smell of the orange was so strong and juicy that im sure 10 people close to me could smell it.

And so….

Me: Do you want an orange?

She: No thank you. Im ok. ( with a smile)

After a few seconds, she spoke to me and time flew so much faster. It was soon 4.40 and time to check-in.

Eurotrotter journal: Tales of Bratislava

30 Nov

Im sure the avid readers of my blog, my dear friends, have heard of how 45 Euros was ripped off me by that tram control officer! I could have dealt with the situation differently after thinking over it but at that time, in that situation, all you can think of how stupid you were, not thinking straight. Even the airport issue where I had to pay for check in baggage, I could have dealt with that better also after telling people my story, and hearing their ideas if how I could have not paid.

BUT I strongly hold on to the belief that what is meant to be your will be and what is meant to go somewhere else will. To put it simply, the money which I lost here and there during this trip especially, was maybe to make up for those times I tried to cheat the system in some countries to save money, despite it being wrong. I’m no angel, my dear friends know that.

Like in Venice, I didn’t pay for the water boat on the second day because it was so expensive, 6.50 euros for one ride. Imagine, I took like 6 boats. That is just one country, if I continue, it will take a long time. I’m guilty but when you are on budget trip, you try to save as much as you can and it is Allah’s way of showing me that I will have to part with the money anyway in other ways where it is more painful.

I just read an email about this 90/10 principal where 10 percent of things happen and the 90 percent is the consequence of how you react to it. Well I’m not really able to explain just understood it in my head. I guess it is how you deal with situations which out you on the spot that determines how you end up. If I let that bother me at the first destination, Bratislava, I would not be able to enjoy the rest of my trip.

Secondly, as mentioned I met so many people on this trip, one of them being this Japanese girl, Y.

Met her in the hostel and we had a wonderful nice chat, I don’t know how else to describe it. Its funny how it is always so interesting to talk to a stranger for the first time and you can hit it off, end up talking for hours.

mother

30 Nov

Song lyrics of ” Your Mother” by Yusuf Islam.

Who should you give your love to?
Your respect and your honour to?
Who should you pay good mind to – after Allah,
And Rasullullah?
Comes your Mother,
Who next? Your Mother
Who next? Your Mother
And then you Father

Cause who used to hold you
And clean you and clothe you?
Who used to feed you
And always be with you?
When you were sick, stay up all night,
Holding you tight?
That’s right no other, your Mother

Who should you take good care of,
Giving all your love?
Who should you think the most of – after Allah
And Rasullullah?
Comes your Mother,
Who next? Your Mother
Who next? Your Mother
And then you Father

Cause who used to hear you
Before you could talk?
Who used to hold you
Before you could walk?
And when you fell, who’d pick you up?
Clean your cut?
No one but, your Mother, your Mother

Who should you stay right close to?
Listen most to?
Never say no to – after Allah
And Rasullullah?
Comes your Mother,
Who next? Your Mother
Who next? Your Mother
And then you Father

Cause who used to hug you
And buy you new clothes?
Comb your hair and blow your nose?
And when you cried who wiped your tears?
Knows your fears? Who really cares?
Your Mother

Say Alhamdulillah,
Thank you Allah
Thank You Allah for my Mother

I cant describe how i feel but it is a few things which if you knew, you would feel worse then when you didnt know and wished you never found out.

When people say somethings about you which is untrue but…

When people leave you out of things…

When people move on with their lives…

When people said something true right at you…

When people go about their everyday lives like the hereafter is non-existant…

We are not here to please people so i shouldnt read too much into what ever is happening.

Eurotrotter journal: Milan

29 Nov
I went from the airport to the Central Station. When we were landing in Milan, we went over the Alps; it was so beautiful. I was totally awed…seeing the alps for the first time.
In Milan, there is not much to see…well i went to the station which was huge, there is like a flea market for christmas maybe, there is also the famous Dom which is so overwhelmingly huge.
I also had some pastry with something sweet inside. Umm…delicious and my all time favorite kebab from a Turkish restaurant in this small town near Milan. Time flew…
I met someone who brought me around and we had a good time. Milan will always be remembered differently. The people we meet always have an impact on us, no matter how big or small. Much happened. I left for the airport at 11pm to wait for my morning flight.

feeling

28 Nov

You know the feeling of wanting to go home so badly but you have a long way to reach there.

That was exactly how i felt 2 days ago when i was in Hahn airport so excited that im finally going home to Finland of course, nearer home than Singapore.

Got through the check-in, the security control and few minutes after standing at the gate waiting to board the airplane; announcement: (the agony of having to wait while it is first broadcasted in German, then French, lastly English) that the flight to Tampere is cancelled due to bad weather.

I was lost for a moment but i just followed the crowd not knowing what to do as this has never happened on any of the many Ryanair flight i’ve taken. So i headed for the ticket counter which in 5 minutes became packed with Finnish and Germans. When I am alone i have to be tough otherwise i will not survive. I learnt that after travelling for some time. Waited in line for 10 minutes though i was one of the first few.

Two options were offered: 1) cancel flight and get your refund  or 2) rebook another flight for free

Well, for my case if i cancel, i will have to decide what to do on my own and without internet…i cant do much. I just spent 15 euros travelling from Cologne to Hahn, so not going to waste it. Next flight to Tampere was Friday which is fully booked and after that was Sunday. What was i to do from Wednesday to Sunday??? In Frankfurt again? Nope.

Other better option was rebook to go to Dublin on the very same day and then to Tampere on Friday.

Still i had to wait 5 hours for the next flight.

While waiting, i watched with fascination: people, the most interesting thing to past time.

While wating, i bought a book called,” Remember me” by Sophie Kinseller. The opening was about how she was experiencing a terrible night and all she wanted to do was go home. Just exactly how i was feeling at that very moment. Though no regrets visiting Ireland. Wonderful place.

I will be back with more on my trip, the best ever, with pictures this time as Im back!!!!!!!

now i know what she meant

25 Nov

When i met a New zealander in Frankfurt, she told me she had been travelling alone but has never been alone. I didnt get her meaning but now i do.

Im travelling alone but i met so many people from all the world. For instance yesterday in Mostar, i was walking and enjoying the beauty, there us a special effect when walking in the cobbled streets of old town. Just sitting on the the stone wall, watch as the emerald river go by under the crooked bridge which hold so much memories, good and bad for the locals.

So, as i was saying…i was walking looking for an atm machine because i was out of cash then suddenly this lady who brought me to my hostel in Sarajevo 2 days ago appeared in front of me. She was with a group of people which included a Japanese guy. This lady, Yasmina, said he is the guy you were in the train with, trying to provoke my memory of him saying that he is from Japan. But i was with a Hong Kong and Canadian guy and this guy looked so different from that guy.

Then the Japanese came along as he was unsure what was happening as well. Then i explained to him that it is a case of mistaken identity on her part. He asked where i was from, said he was in Singapore for 5 days. She invited me to join them for coffee as they were heading to that. He urged me to join them if i had nothing to do. I declined as i had no money and had to withdraw.

And so i went on my business and eventually headed to Kulluk Restaurant where Majda, the lady who owns the hostel im living at suggested to serve godd trought fish. I entered and the lady asked me if she could help and in Bosnia, people smoke in air conditioned places as well. Kind of used to it already, some men were in the first level smoking. She said there is more space upstairs. As i headed upstairs, guess who i met…(i cant find many symbols on this keyboard)

The Japanese guy and a group of people and they invited me to join them. Interestingly…they were so warm and welcoming…well it is the nature of travellers. And so the Japanese guy wennt ahead and introduced me to all of them, a Canadian guy, a French guy who is a photographer, a Romanian guy who worked with the Japanese guy, a Swiss girl who is just a traveller and a Polish girl. I thought they were like travelling together but turned out they all randomly got together in Sarajevo and travelled to Mostar for a day.

I had lunch while they had breakfast and we planned to go to Blagaj together after that. I had to return to the hostel to get directions there from Majda so they said they wont leave without me. Imagine that and they just met me.

It wasnt that far but i went on the wrong side and ended up on the Bosnian side and walked a long way eventually reaching after 40minutes, instead of 10 minutes. Happens alot to me though.

And so we rushed to go to that waterfall and they are such a fun bunch of people. I had so much fun and had exchanged lots of ideas about Bosnia, religion, our lifes. We had Cevapi after we got back from Blagaj.

How some of us was connected was through the woman called Yasmina but we all know her by different names. Funny. Fate brings people together in the most unexpected ways.

Now i can say the same, i travel alone but never feel lonely. On my previous trip, i was alone mostly but this time…never. Alhamdulilah.

i cant express all that i feel

23 Nov

I’m overwhelmed with the amount of information im receiving especially in BiH; the war stuff, the feelings you gather from the people, the amazing place with the amazing people, people i met there from all over. This was definitely worth the effort travelling all the way from Finland. Sarajevo was beautiful and Mostar is less touristy so it’s little better. The bus journey was managable, not too long but gosh so worth it!!!!!!

The view is increduslously amazing. I travelled through mountains…woah! Beyond words really.

Travelling during the non-seasonal period has its benefits and disadvantages all the same. But in Mostar, I got this really wonderful hostess who is the owner of the hostel and it was recommended by another wonderful Bosnian in Sarajevo who is also the owner of the hostel there. But since she was quite free and very nice also; she brought me around the old town and i even went to her home for dinner after having chocolate coffee and chocolate cream cake with her friend. Before that i had coffee in the hostel… drinking too much coffee. Yesterday i was treated to Bosnian coffee which was really strong by a sweet Bosnian girl. So there is so much activity…

I had a chat with a few girls in the dorm …i can go on and on but i will safe some for when i get back to dear ol’Lappeenranta.
