The famous Jeju Island

25 Apr

Dragon head rock was the first site we visited upon flying into Jeju. The sunrise was more of the attraction then the rocks. Though if you know the history perhaps it would be more interesting. The whole island was created out of molten after several thousand volcanic eruptions in the long history. The rocks are all black.

This is a famous site for the shooting of some Korean drama. For me it was a beautiful viewing point. I think, for someone who dislikes crowds like me, no matter how nice the place is, I cannot enjoy it while crowding with a lot of other people. Tourists from China are everywhere and the arrive in busloads.

We spotted a few sea ladies going about their everyday work catching sea life to sell. More on sea ladies of Jeju island later on…

Jeju is known for their oranges and their orange chocolates. These if you notice closely aren’t real oranges as it isn’t the season fir oranges so the shop selling orange chocolate has styrofoam balls painted orange hanging from their orange tree. The chocolate is quite delicious though and I personally prefer the rice cripies chocolate. The orange chocolate has quite a refreshing taste of the citrus.

We bought some for sovenoir but they are so expensive. 10,000 Korean won for a box of 7 little orange chocolate. If you convert, it is $12.50.

You can climb all the way up to have a bird’s eye view of the island. Mum stayed at the foothill while dad, DH, DS and I went up. Only DH made it all the way to the top. The rest of us made it halfway.

Sea ladies singing while they rest after a hard day at work. The fire to keep them warm. All seasons, they work even in the freezing waters.

When you hear their story, you’ll definitely shed a tear.

They work hard while their husbands work a little. Jeju men are known to be lazy. They bring the ladies into the middle of the sea to catch sea life while they wait on the raft. These ladies do dive after dive to catch sealife without any diving equipments. They leave their children at home while they slept and go out to work in the wee hours of the morning. They return home to do the household chores abd tend to the children in the day. These hardy ladies work hard for many years and they suffer from some disease because of their work in the sea, in their later years.
They return to work 3 days after childbirth. They cry of they find out that they’ve given birth to a girl. To suffer the same fate…
